WordPress.com or WordPress.org in 2013?

We sometimes get asked by existing and potential customers what are the benefits of having their own hosted blog and a blog on WordPress.com.As hosting blogs is one of our “bread & butter” services rather than us answer this question we can now point people over to Sarah Gooding’s excellent article at wpmu.org where she gives an excellent overview of the differences.

The post also has an infographic which we have pasted below to clarify the differences. The only difference we would emphasise to anyone thinking of setting up their own blog is that of prices quoted in the infographic. Currently you’ll be pleased to know we continue to offer a hosted blog and domain name from as little as £9.99 a year.

So what you waiting for you know the advantages of both hosting your own blog and having your own domain name so jump in now and get blogging.

Easily Create a Twitter Archive with a WordPress Blog

Some weeks ago we posted a link on our Twitter account  about installing a plugin from PlanetOzh that turns a WordPress blog into an archive of your Twitter account. So in this post we decided to test it out and see just how easy/hard it was. (It was very easy)

See the finished results here

Install a new WordPress blog from your control panel, update anything that needs to be first and add your desired theme (optional) or use the default Twenty Eleven theme as we have in the video clip.

(Again Optional) I added a new category ”Tweets” for it to post to.

(Optional )Link blog’s directory to a sub domain (e.g twitter.severn-media.co.uk)

Download the Ozh’ Tweet Archiver Plugin

Add new plugin in Dashboard, upload and activate.

Enter your Twitter username

Select Manual Archiving (this is a one-off deal it does it automatically from then on however often you’ve configured it)

Job done

Enjoy an archive of all your tweets.

Perhaps if they were important evergreen relevant tweets you could consider using another plugin such as WP-Old Posts and re-share some of your pearls of wisdom again.

Not something we’ll be doing though!

Below is a screen capture video of the process but contact us if you have install issues on our hosted sites.

Don’t forget to take a look at the finished results of our Twitter Archive here

We’d love to know how you get on with this so feel free to comment and let us know.

Bewdley Web Hosting, Domain Names & Websites

Bewdley Flood Jan 3rd 2013Yes we do web hosting and yes we register domain names all at competitive prices but today a difference.

In a one-off post we thought, given how proud we are to be based here in Bewdley Worcestershire, we would share a few photos of the river in flood as it is the major water cooler conversation piece today.

I’ve left the photos in their original large size in case anyone want to use them (feel free) a credit of @SevernMedia would always be welcome. This may mean the page may take a while to load fully.

Normal blog posts on-topic resume tomorrow :)

Update….
Keeping pictures full size created problems so have uploaded them to a board on our Pinterest account.

Check them out on the board http://pinterest.com/severnmedia/bewdley-flood-jan-2013/  :)
